I realized something about myself the other day: if the internet ever blows up, I’ll be in a world of hurt. Like you, I rely on the internet almost as much as food and water. Suddenly being without would mean drastic and immediate changes. That’s why I have suddenly discovered a burning hope that the internet never stops working.
Things were not always this way. I was born in the 1960s. There was no internet back then. In fact, I was in my thirties before I went online for the first time. But so much has changed since then. The modern world is not the same world I grew up in, which is not a bad thing. Still, we are living under entirely different paradigm.
Just to illustrate, here are five reasons I sincerely hope the internet never blows up:
I need it to make a living
At the top of the list is my very livelihood. I make my living online. And when I say this, I don’t just mean that I use the internet as a tool to earn a paycheck. My job involves producing content for SEO and digital marketing purposes. If the internet blows up, no one needs my services anymore. I am out of work.
Sure, there are other jobs out there. But who is going to hire someone now just a few years away from retirement age? I am at the point in my life where it is too late to start over in a new career. I need the internet to keep paying my bills.
I love video chat
I am a father of three and a grandfather of six. We all live in different places. So, like many other families, we rely on video chat to stay in touch. I confess that I love it. We could exchange letters, like people used to do before the internet, but there is something more satisfying about a video chat. It may not be the same as getting together face-to-face, but it is the next best thing when we are separated by distance.
I’m not a fan of stamps and envelopes
I love being able to pay my bills online. No more envelopes to stuff; no more running to the post office to pick up stamps. I find the old school way of doing things rather inconvenient, even though I live in a major metropolitan region. I couldn’t imagine living in rural America and still paying bills the old way. I would need to have Blazing Hog 4G wireless internet so that I could pay my bills online.
I am not a fan of standing in line
I’ll tell you another thing I’m not a big fan of – standing in line. Before the internet, doing anything at the motor vehicle department meant waiting long enough to warrant bringing your own birthday cake. You could actually age while waiting for your number to be called. Same thing at the bank. Now that all this stuff can be done online, waiting in long lines is a thing of the past.
Online shopping is awesome
Though I could list many more reasons, I will close with the fact that online shopping is awesome. Nothing is sweeter than placing an order from your couch and then waiting for it to be delivered. I have never been a shopper, so I don’t miss malls or window shopping downtown. I would rather click and wait for the delivery.
If the internet ever blows up, I am going to be an unhappy person. Let’s hope that it never happens.
